Command Historian/Archivist

This candidate will perform duties for the XVIII Airborne Corps Chief of Staff Office as the Command Historian. The Command History Office provides comprehensive historical support encompassing current and past XVIII Airborne Corps operations, exercises, and activities; collaboratively COLLECTS, PRESERVES, ARCHIVES historical materials, and EDUCATES the Corps; provides accurate and timely historical research and analysis in support of mission requirements; and executes the Commander’s vision to define the Command’s identity and crystalize the Command’s culture and ethos. The Command History Office provides centralized management, direction, and guidance and is responsible for all historical functions and activities of the command, staff, and subordinate units.

  • Responsible for helping to ensure the proper functioning of the XVIII Airborne Corps History Office.
  • Establish a centrally managed collection plan that captures and catalogues relevant artifacts, written, digital, video, and photographic materials, and oral history interviews for research purposes from the XVIII Airborne Corps staff and subordinate units.

    • Operationalize unit history – Proactive effort to collect missing artifacts and documents from former and current unit members
    • utilizing social media and XVIII Airborne Corps Portal techniques to increase history and cultural awareness in the Corps.
    • Conduct outreach and staff assistance regarding historical education matters.
    • Perform research duties and provide written historical output. Conduct research in the XVIII Airborne Corps Archives to provide service in response to requests, both official and unofficial, for information. Based on extensive background knowledge and thorough awareness of collection, respond to requests by providing specific information or photographs, tapes, maps, papers, and other documents. Provide reference service in response to written and oral inquiries from various XVIII Airborne Corps staff offices, other government agencies, scholars, and members of the general public.
    • Provide the XVIII Airborne Corps Command Historian and XVIII Airborne Corps Headquarters leadership with concrete ways to sustain the program with manpower, improved processes, and analytics. Recommend additional positions and their scope, as required. Project budget and manpower requirements needed to sustain a functioning and effective history program.
    • Maintain liaison with organizational elements of the command. Coordinate with XVIII Airborne Corps staff, and subordinate units regarding historical collection, research, and promulgation of information. Maintain continuous contacts with other government agencies, colleges and universities, historical associations, professional societies, scholars and researchers, and the general public, promoting interest in and awareness of the historical material available for scholarly research in the holdings of the XVIII Airborne Corps Archives as directed by the XVIII Airborne Corps Historian and as appropriate for classification access and need to know.
